18 THE TRAIL SOUTH
GRUB AND BENNY had been on the trail right close to the stream where it cascaded down a steep rocky drop off and the noise of the rushing water was so loud that neither of them had heard the shot from back at their camp. The snow was starting to fall much heavier as they approached the end of their trap line. Even though they wanted to check all the traps three hours later it was nearly a blizzard. They took the single beaver they had and headed back to camp. They were wet and freezing when they got back, Grub wondered where Ely was since there was no fire. He had an uneasy feeling as they got close and his sharp trained eyes was scanning every inch of the terrain all around camp. Grub brought his rifle up and in seeing that, Benny never said a word he just dropped the beaver he was carrying cocked his rifle and stepped off to the side so Grub was not in front of him.
The snow was sticking and covering the ground and as they walked into camp the first thing they both saw was the lean-to where their plews were stored was torn apart and all their plews were gone. Then Grub saw Ely lying in the brush right where he had fallen. He froze right there and told Benny not to move. Grub’s experienced eyes studied the ground all around. He could see the tracks that the four men had left but the snow was covering them fast. He wanted to run to his lifelong friend and partner but he was afraid of what he was going to find.
Benny was looking at the torn-up ground as well; he could see where the horses had been led into camp and where the loaded horses had been ridden out. Even though the trail was plain to see they both knew if this snow kept up it wouldn’t be long before it was completely covered up.
Benny said, “They’re gone Grub, and he headed straight for Ely. Grub hesitated not wanting to find what he was afraid he was going to find. Benny knelt by Ely’s side looking at the gaping hole in his upper chest when Ely gasped in a ragged breath. Benny turned to Grub and yelled, “He’s alive, Grub!”
Grub ran to his side and said, “Benny, get the fire goin’ an put a pot of water to heatin’, then fix him a bed in this empty lean-to so’s we can get ‘em out a this here storm.”
Benny didn’t hesitate at all and while he was getting that done Grub took his knife and cut the buckskin jacket and shirt away from the ragged wound. He then carefully rolled Ely up on his side and checked to see if the lead ball had gone all the way through, but it had not so he knew the ball would have to be cut out.
Ely’s breathing was so faint Grub was afraid it would stop at any time.
